On your adventure through life, have you ever discovered that you learnt something as a child, however as you progress through life you questioned what you had learnt? Then, later on, found you need to untangle what you had learnt as those thoughts of beliefs were no longer serving you and you decided to relearn a new way of being?

For me one of my own adventures of learning and unlearning and relearning centred around being enough. What I am grateful for is that I learnt about the concept of unlearn and relearn and it is working for me.

I would like to tell you a small story about the learning process. This story is from the book titled Zen Flesh and Bones: A collection of Zen and pre Zen writings

“Nan- in a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868 to 1912) received a University professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured is visitor’s cup full and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could resist himself. “It is overfull no more will go in!”

“Like this cup,” Nan-in said “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?” “

I like the tea story. It is a glorious reminder that to learn we have to be humble and need to empty our minds and make more for the new.

How does learning and learning and relearning relate to you in your own life? Feel free to share your insights in the comment box below.

  1. Dear Keen Writer,
I really loved the analogy of the Zen story. It is a vital part of our growth as humans to develop the capacity to recognise and unlearn our parental/societal conditioning and other limiting beliefs, and reinstate empowering beliefs in their stead to fulfill our true potential. It’s something I am also committed to doing for myself.
The belief “I am enough” just as I am is a powerful one, given the world constantly puts the message that we have to be more and do more, preferably follow what is set as the current trend or standard. To get out of that rat race and to believe in oneself and our inherent worth is quite a task, but a satisfying one. Because only by being comfortable/compassionate and confident in who we are right now can we consider being better versions of our self.
The bottom line is developing a great relationship with the most important person in our life, i.e. ourselves. This is the foundation on which everything else in our life is built — other relationships, success, abundance, capacity for joy, peace of mind and the attitude of service.
Wish you would write more on this.
    Cheers!
