The Alchemist is a novel written by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that was first published in 1988. This book was originally published in Portuguese. It was later translated into other languages. This book is till date an international best seller.

I feel that every decade a book is published that changes the lives of its reader forever. The Alchemist is a book of such kind. This book has a life enchanting effect on millions of people. I feel that this book has a beautiful story with a pointed message for every reader. It is a wise and inspiring fable the pilgrimage life should be.

This book pours out four powerful lessons. The constant theme in this book is to pursue your dreams by following what your heart desires. This book inspires me to dream big and do bigger to fulfill my dreams. This book has many lessons and nuggets of inspiration sprinkled throughout the story. According to me the important lessons are:

No matter what you do, make sure that you do it because it is what your heart and soul desire : What I feel is that this lesson is important for all of us. This lesson teaches us to do our work with passion and dedication. I feel that doing stuff just for the sake of doing it will never make you intrested in the work you are doing. Things done with lot of dedication and putting the heart and soul into them are the works which always shine out than the rest.

You will fail. Don’t give up in the process : In the past few months since the lockdown I’ve realized that life is not a bed of roses. If there’s good in life there has to be bad also. The combination of good and bad together is life. Hence, never give up when you fail.

This is a phrase which is talked a lot in the book. Maktub translates to ‘that which is written.’ The book portrays to us that all our actions are in the context of faith, which God has already written for us. I feel that this phrase simply means that our paths are already outlined for us to follow. Also our faits are written within in the universe.

I personally relate to this lesson as I’ve always heard my mom talk about it. She always says ‘simple living and high thinking.’ Being simple yet having great thinking is the go to for moat of the successful people in today’s time. For all of us in and around us we’ve a lot of examples of people who find their happiness in living all the small moments in life. We’ll should learn from them.

If you have come this far reading this blog post I know that this post has made you curious about the lessons of the book. I hope you my readers will grab the book and read it and self discover more amazing lessons from the book. I sincerely wish you all happy reading this book.

  1. Dear Keen Writer,
It’s a lovely article based on the popular inspirational book.
To tell you the truth, the book’s magic was lost on me (wonder if my mind and my heart were differently aligned while I was supposed to read it). So, I was curious about how you received it. After reading this, I feel I should give the book and myself a second chance.
That said, out of my flimsy reading exercise of the book in the past, one sentence struck me and one sentence alone: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Not only do I believe it, I also know that it is true. And I am surprised that the one thing I mined from The Alchemist didn’t strike you (because this sentence is all I remember and all I needed from the book thus far).
    What do you think?
I know you have a taste in books. Do share in later articles your favourite books and why you like them. What books have had a significant impact on you?
    Cheers!

    1. Dear Harshi,

The 4 lessons I mentioned in this article are based on my reading and understanding of the book. Of course “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” is another lesson from the book which I’ve learnt from the book itself. I left that out coz I want my readers to dig in the book to find more of such lessons and point it out to me the way you have. The topic suggested by you is an interesting one shall definitely be bringing out more of my favorite books in front of you all in the future. Thanks for the feedback and also thanks for pointing out yet another important lesson from the book

  2. Hi Monikkutty, excellent article. Let it be an inspiration for people like me who don’t read much books like this. This article is really going to influence the readers. Keep it up. May God Bless You.
